The spread of the deadly HIV/AIDS is accelerating in China with 126,808 people infected with the virus, including 28,789 confirmed AIDS patients, according to latest health reports. Experts estimate that China now has 840,000 people infected with HIV including 80,000 AIDS patients. This is considerably higher than the figures reported last year with the figures rising to over a margin of 19,818. In addition, the patients confirmed with AIDS also rose by 4,834 since the end of 2004.China had reported 106,990 people infected with HIV, including 23,955 patients, by the end of 2004. However, the figures only accounted for 12.7 per cent of the total infected.

The report has been released in conjunction with the “World AIDS day” to be celebrated on December 1st. The death toll of HIV/AIDS has already reached 7,375, according to deputy head of the disease control department.

The officials have stated that the focus of this year’s World AIDS Day would be in encouraging participation of governments, organizations and individuals in fighting HIV/AIDS.

The situation only calls for immediate action and intervention for curbing the spread of the deadly disease. If timely response is not initiated to address the issue, it is estimated that the figures would be as high as 10 million by 2010.
