Chlorine is one of the most widely used disinfectants for indoor swimming pools. It has been used for the past decades due to it's ability to kill Bacteria efficiently and at a more economical reate. But this chemical might be the likely reason for the sudden increase in childhood asthma among asthma victims.
The culprit is a chemical known as trichloroamine (chemical name : nitrogen trichloride). This inhalable irritant has the ability to trigger the reneration of three protiens. The protiens have the ability to cripple the cellular barrier protecting the lungs. Thus making it more prone to the passage of allergins, the main cause of asthma attacks. The chemical is formed due to the reaction of chlorine (in pools) and organinc matter sectreted by swimmers. The organic matters include sweat and urine! But during extensive studys, it was found that the levels of trichloroamine depends on how crowded the pool is, cleanliness of swimmers and ventilation of the pool.
AdvertisementThe study consisted of 250 blood samples of young primary school children, who swam regularly. 30 more were taken form children and adults just before and after each session in the pool. The study was conducted by Belgian researchers, writing for the British research journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine.
