Harvard University has revealed that children whose mothers during pregnancy consumed low-mercury fish couple of times a week were more intelligent than children of those mothers who did not.
Conversely it also stated that consumption of fish with high mercury content lowered the intelligence score.
The study tested 135 children and took into account the fish intake of their mothers during pregnancy.
Data revealed that children whose mothers consumed fish twice a week and consequently mercury intake was less than 1 parts per million (ppm); in them intelligence levels increased by 7% with every additional serving of fish.
The study also infers that an increase of 1 ppm of mercury intake dropped the babies' intelligence by 12.5%.
One serving of swordfish per week contributed 1ppm to the system. Pregnant women are therefore advised to avoid swordfish, king mackerel, tilefish, shark and white tuna.
Safe fishes are sardines, herring, cod and haddock as they have lower mercury levels.
Along with mercury another harmful component to be considered in farm raised fish are PCBs.
The pacific wild salmon is a good fish as it has lower mercury levels and pollutants.
