Researchers have developed a new improved procedure to do laproscopic esophagectomy on patients who suffers from the problems of esophagus, including cancer of the esophagus.
Currently to test the extent of damage in the esophagus, surgeons had accepted a noninvasive procedure called laproscopic esophagectomy. In this process the surgeons had to make a small incision on the abdomen of the patients to insert fiber optic instruments to be positioned in the esophagus with the help of the camera. This method was infinitely better than the previous procedure of cutting open the abdomen of the patient. Yet this procedure required extreme competency and is thus done in only a few centers of the world.
The invention of the new research is called laproscopic inversion esophagectomy, or LIE. In this the surgeons try to roll up the esophagus, section by section, slowly into the neck, that gives the surgeons more space to cut out the damaged tissue safely. The procedure makes it easier to remove pre-cancerous tissues, and esophageal disease other than cancer with fewer complications.
Researchers are confident that the rate of survivors from this procedure will be higher than the rate for open surgical procedures for the same cause.
The scientists have presented their invention to meeting of European Association of Endoscopic Surgery in Italy.
