Cough medication formula called dextromethorphan may be able to help people suffering from fibromyalgia.

In a research done by scientists of University of Florida the cough medicine seemed to bring relief in the intensity of pain suffered by the people from fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia syndrome occurs with extensive musculo-skeletal pain and fatigue. There re no known causes of this diseases. More women than men report to be suffering from fibromyalgia, although the condition can affect anybody and at any age. There is no single therapy that can treat the condition of fibromyalgia.

The new study suggests that there may be an alternate way of treating fibromyalgia. The treatment may not be one single medication but a whole lot of interventions designed to bring total relief to the patients. In this regard the role of dextromethorphan may be quite important.

Scientists however warn the patients of the condition against self-medication or of using the drug without physician’s advice as the dosage and the guidelines for the use of the medication is yet to be established.

The result was published in the recent issue of the Journal of Pain.
