Cloning of human embryos for stem cells made possible

by Medindia Content Team on May 22 2005 1:40 PM

Korean scientists have been able to clone human embryos for creating stem cells that may be used to help patients with diseases or injury. The newly created stem cell lines are an exact match with the patients’ DNA and immune systems. .

This research have provided new insight into using stem cells cloned from the persons to use it on them as a treatemnt. This is for the first time human embryonic stem cells have been found suitable to use in treating patients. Research points out that it isnow possible to have adult cell nuclear transfers, which was previously unheard of. .

The Korean researchers, along with researchers from University of Pittsberg, had emptied the DNA rom the eggs donated by volunteers and transferred the DNA from the skin cells of the patients into them to clone the stem cells. The researchers feel that the age of the donor of the egg is important for such procedures to be successful.

Although it may be a long way from cloned stem cell lines to creating matching orgns for transplant in the patint’s body, scientists of the world feel that this may be the first step towards it. .

The research comes out in the latest edition of journal Science..
