New research shows while obesity may increase a person's risk of developing dementia later in life, a healthy diet may have the opposite effect.
In a recent study conducted, researchers followed nearly 1,500 participants for more than 20 years. They found those who were obese in middle age were twice as likely to develop dementia later in life. Also, patients who had high cholesterol and high blood pressure in middle age were six-times more likely to develop dementia later on.
In another study, researchers found women who reported eating more green leafy vegetables in middle age had better cognitive functioning when they entered their 70s.According to researchers women who reported consuming the highest amount of vegetables rich in folate and antioxidants saw the most benefit.
Researchers conclude saying that their study should make physicians and policy makers take notice that they can make significant contributions to health aging in several areas by encouraging people to eat healthful foods.
