Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide .New research shows milk does a body good by lowering the risk of colorectal cancer.High milk consumption and calcium intake were found to be associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer.
Among all of the food sources of calcium, only milk consumption was linked to a decreased risk of colorectal cancer, particularly cancers of the distal colon and rectum. Results of the study show each two 8-ounce glasses per day of milk decreased risk by 12 percent. People who consumed more than 8.9 ounces per day had a 15-percent reduction in risk. Increasing calcium intake to 1,000 milligrams a day or more could result in 15-percent fewer cases of colorectal cancer in women and 10-percent fewer cases in men, according to researchers.
More than 500,000 individuals from five different countries participated in the study. Based on the analysis, New York residents had the lowest milk intake. The Netherlands and Sweden also had low milk intake, but yogurt consumption was highest in these countries. In the United States, more than 50 percent of participants at various sites did not consume yogurt. However, yogurt was not significantly linked to a lower risk of colorectal cancer.
Thus researchers say that the different rates of colorectal-cancer incidence in various countries may be related to diet.
