The Egg has over the years been a high source of nutrition for many people around the globe. This extremely versatile food that can be eaten in several forms, it is the key ingredient for cooking several delicacy from around the world. With Easter just round the corner an animal rights group in Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, are to launch a campaign on Wednesday urging people not to eat eggs.

Volunteers of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) maintain that an egg eaten means a life taken away. The campaign comes a few days before Easter when Christians across the state consume eggs lavishly after the Sunday Easter mass.

Rohini Kamath, campaign coordinator of the program, told IANS: "Tomorrow at 12 noon we will hold a symbolic action in front of the state secretariat where a girl would come out from an egg. This is just to show that eating an egg means a life is taken away."

According to Kamath, it is a myth that eggs provide great energy. She said in reality, dals (pulses) have more nutritional value. Each egg contains about 13.6 percent protein and 13.3 percent saturated fat. Dal, on the other hand, has 24 percent protein and only 1.3 percent unsaturated fat per 100 grams.

"So we have alternatives for the egg, and that is what our campaign means," she said.

Peta, an international non-profit charitable organization, is dedicated to defending the rights of all animals. It maintains that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. Established in 1980 the organization has been educating policymakers as well as the public about animal abuse around the globe and promoting kind treatment of animals.
