The Chancellor and dean of University of Massachusetts Medical School Dr. Aaron Lazare has decided to step down due to health reasons. It was reported that he has developed cardiac arrhythmia.
Dr. Lazare was responsible for the merger of state hospital and the private memorial health care. He has also set up the $ 100 million research lab there. In 1982, he joined UMass as a professor of psychiatry and chair of the department after serving 14 years at Massachusetts General Hospital.
An abnormal heart rhythm led him to undergo routine cardiac test and he was diagnosed with atrial flutter. Currently he is on medication and has decided to slow down. However he would continue to teach medical education and psychiatry at the UMass and also continue with his research and writing.
It is also said that a kidney has been removed for Dr. Lazare as he was suffering from renal cancer. Jack M. Wilson, the president of UMass said that Dr.Lazare would surely be missed at the UMass campus.
