The patient was undergoing counselling at the hospital for about a year for suspected AIDS but Shrivastava told him that he did not have AIDS and there was no need to prescribe any medicines.

At this, Jaiswal got enraged, doused the counsellor with kerosene and set him ablaze. Shrivastava was rushed to the hospital in the medical college campus and his condition is reported to be serious.

The police have arrested the assailant who is undergoing treatment for mental disorder.

According to the police, the counsellor said the offender had been claiming that he was an AIDS patient and demanding medicines for the disease though he hid did not have it.

"Preliminary interrogations suggested that the offender was mentally sick and a few medicines used for mental patients were recovered from his possession," Jabalpur Police Superintendent Manohar Varma told IANS.

The police have registered a case under Section 307 of the IPC.
