In a shocking incident in a hospital in Italy, organs from HIV positive patient were transplanted to three patients. This error of a gigantic proportion occurred in Careggi hospital in Florence.

Kidneys and liver from a 41 year old dead woman infected with AIDS were donated to three patients. The hospital authorities term this as a ‘tragic human error’. According to the director of the hospital Mauro Marabini, the tests for HIV had come out as positive but the expert had noted it as negative by mistake.

The three patients have been informed about the same and are currently being treated with antiretroviral drugs. HIV tests will be performed on these patients periodically. According to Franco Filipponi, director of the transplants agency for Tuscany, the chance of infection is high in these cases as the presence of HIV virus in some cells cannot be ruled out.

This incident has caused a furore in Italy with the politicians ordering the resignation of the concerned officials in this case. Codacons, the Italian consumer group has demanded the examining of hospitals involved in transplant procedures.
