Thimphu: Sonam Choden, the mother of two-year-old Leki Dorji, never hoped to be happy again. But thanks to the Vellore-based Christian Medical College in India's Tamil Nadu state, which treated the burn injuries of Dorji and made him "eat, walk and also talk".
Choden, an uneducated 23-year-old woman, said she lost all hopes but this drastic improvement in her child was the happiest moment in her life, reported Bhutan's online Kuensel newspaper Tuesday."He can now eat, walk and also talk when I am alone. He never does so in presence of others," she said.
But Leki is not just a single case.
Bhutanese Liaison Officer Choki Gyeltshen, who is posted in Vellore, said about 100 patients suffering from renal and kidney failure, blood and bone marrow cancer are referred every year to the hospital.
However, the Bhutanese patients have to go through some trouble before they can access the high quality treatment.
"The treatment here is good but it takes almost three days to meet the doctor and a day for endoscopies," Rinchen, a patient's escort, was quoted by Kuensel as saying.

The Bhutanese government had spent more than Nu.18 million between June 2005 and June 2006 for health referrals to Vellore, said Gyeltshen.
