Increased Mental Disorders In Children

by Jyothsna on Feb 6 2007 11:53 AM

According to a latest study, there is a pronounced increase of mental illnesses among children. This includes autism, Tourette Syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, obsessive compulsive disorders and hyperkinetic illnesses. This study was published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine.

Researches are not sure if this ascend could be attributed to the increased awareness about these diseases or the environmental factors. But the data with the Danish Psychiatric Registry reveals that Tourette syndrome has more than doubled between the years 1990-95 and hypokinetic disorder is almost tripled at age five between 1992 and 1999.

A research conducted in 2005 hints that autism has been understood well and diagnosed well. When a screening study was conducted for children born between 1992 and 1995 and later between 1996 and 1998, the number of autistic cases was stable. This goes on to prove that doctors possess the right kind of knowledge to identify autistic children.
