A passion for surgeries without taking a break has helped a doctor here to conduct 50 operations at one go by using his unique technique of single hole surgery.
Doctor Ajay Prakash started operating patients at the Shanti-Ved hospital in Agra at around 10 p.m. Thursday night and continued surgeries without a break till 10 a.m. Friday morning, removing 45 gall bladders and five appendixes, with his surgery technique, which he describes as a "bloodless coup" of sorts.Prakash is assisted by his doctor wife in the surgeries he conducts. The doctor said he was happy that his son, who is also a surgeon at Belgaum, Karnataka, joined him this year. "The mantle and the skill have now been passed on to the generation next."
For the past several years Prakash has been performing free non-stop operations with help from the Lions Club. Last year, the number of surgeries crossed 80. "This year I wanted to score a century, but the club members were not able to mobilise support and inform the patients in good time. Still there will be more such operations later in the year," he told IANS.
However, his method of single hole surgery has not found acceptance in the medical fraternity as he has refused to share his skill with other doctors. "It's a divine blessing to me from god," he claims.
When Prakash performed more than 60 operations Feb 14, 2005, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam invited him for a chat. Later he got invitations from other parts of the country.
The doctor has performed similar surgeries in Jaipur and Delhi. He uses equipment that does not cost more than Rs.10,000 as against expensive instruments used in laparoscopic surgery.
