Greek government has warned its citizens against using olive pulp as treatment for cancer. This announcement came closely on the heels of a television show which proclaimed olive leaf potion to be an effective remedy for all types of cancer.

According to this show, water mixed with the green liquid from olive leaves, when strained could be an effective treatment for cancer of any degree. This has resulted in people flocking to department stores and farmer’s market to procure the same. There is also a report which states that a few patients have run away from hospitals to undergo this remedial measure.

Government has strictly admonished people to keep away from such trials and has ordered an inquiry on this. A spokesman from the government pointed out that olive leaves could always have a pesticide residue and intake of these leaves might have adverse effects. As the benefit of olive leaves are not established scientifically, it is not right to try out such things.

Olive trees are considered sacred by Greeks and are almost 5000 years old. They consider this tree to be a gift from Athena, the Greek Goddess of wisdom. Olive oil still holds an important component of the Mediterranean food.
