Madrid: The health of Cuban leader Fidel Castro has deteriorated following a series of three failed operations, Spanish newspaper El Pais reported Tuesday.

Castro is in 'very grave' condition following the failed operations and complications from an intestinal infection, El Pais said citing sources from the hospital that employs top Spanish surgeon Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido.

Sabrido, chief surgeon at the Gregorio Maranon Hospital here, flew to Cuba in December to treat the 80-year-old leader.

Castro, who has been in power in Cuba for 47 years, transferred responsibility for governmental affairs to his younger brother in July 2006 before undergoing surgery for a bowel condition. No further information has since been officially released about his health.
