First Open-heart Surgery Performed in Agra

by VR Sreeraman on Jan 7 2007 4:32 PM

Agra's first open-heart surgery was successfully carried out Sunday at the Apollo Hospital.

Dr Pankaj Mahendru, director of the hospital, said it was a big day for the city of the Taj Mahal.

"The surgery, which cost only Rs.100,000, was carried out by Dr Nandan Das Baba and Dr Bhavna Singh with their team of local doctors," he said.

Agra's Apollo Pankaj hospital has many achievements to its credit. Last year the hospital was in news for successfully treating a large number of dengue and chikungunya cases in record time.

Earlier patients had to go to Delhi for such operations, but such new facilities will benefit local people, due to the lower cost and a quality of service that matches the best of hospitals elsewhere, Dr. Mahendru said.
