Babies are cool indeed, but those born with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy may need to get cooler at the top, to protect their brain. Some babies do not get enough oxygen during birth. Such babies can now be helped with a ‘cool cap’ designed to cool the head and prevent brain damage. This product has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
The brain-child of Natus Medical, this device with the brand name of ‘Cool-Cap’ may be a good treatment for the estimated 5,000 to 9,000 US babies who come into the world, with reasonable to intense hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).This product could be an answer to such problems during birth, to avert or soften what might be a debilitating aftermath. The Cool-Cap system ensures a consistent flow of cool water, via a cap, positioned on the infant’s head, which helps in cooling the head.
According to researchers, when oxygen is deprived to the baby at the time of birth, it could cause serious damage to the brain, which may occur in just a few hours or may take days. Statistics reveal that nearly 20% of newborns with HIE do not survive, while 25% suffer severe disability for life.
