According to a major medical study by researchers it is observed that drinking wine may have some health benefits. The latest from researchers in Denmark, observe that people who drink wine now and again may have a lesser risk of developing dementia and Alzheimer's disease. People who drank wine weekly or monthly had the most benefit.
The researchers are realistic about their research. They say people should not suddenly start consuming larger amounts of wine for health reasons. Instead, they predict the healthy substances in wine may one day be identified and made into medications to treat the disease. They speculate it is the flavenoids in the wine that offer the protective effect.
Doctors studied 1,567 people and determined their drinking patterns from the 1975s. Then they looked for signs of dementia or Alzheimer's in the same group in the 1992s. They were able to document 75 people who developed dementia. Researchers then went back and compared alcohol intake of those individuals to those without dementia.
Authors of the study write, "Monthly and weekly intake of wine was significantly associated with a lower risk of dementia." However, drinking beer monthly was responsible for an increase in the risk for dementia.
