Augusto Pinochet, probably Chile's most hated dictator is said to be in a stable condition after a heart attack on Tuesday. The General had undergone an angioplasty to reopen his arteries.

Juan Ignacio Vergara, head doctor at the Military Hospital in Santiago said that though there was no immediate risk of death, his condition rendered him vulnerable to medical complications.

Pinochet overthrew the Marxist government of Chile in 1973, assuming power and ruled till 1990, during which thousands were tortured and many more exiled. He was voted out of power in 1990.

The General is currently been prosecuted in three human rights cases.
