A report released in the state of Pennsylvania, U.S,reveals that there were over 19,000 hospital acquired infections recorded across hospitals there in 2005.
The report the first of its kind that tallied all infections of every kind in various hospitals spread all over the state released in Pennsylvania describes that a shocking 19,000 patients and more have contracted hospital acquired infections when admitted there for some treatment or the other during the year 2005.This report was released by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council which says that nosocomial or hospital infections have risen to by a staggering 64% in ayear. However in the current report more clinical conditions and surgical complications were also included which had not been looked into last year. Also it is notable that hospitals have been consitent and honest about the reports they have been submitting this current year clarified the council.
IT has been estimated that an average of just over 1% of the1.6 million patients whose case studies were looked into contracted hospital acquired infectionswhile getting treated in Pennsylvannian hospitals.
A spokesperson for the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania commented that releasing these figures to the people of the state would certainly benefit them. It gives the patient a platform from which they can ask for clarifications and to question their doctors and related health workers about infections when they are clouded with doubts.
This is the first report in the U.S where results are actually based on figures released by respective hospitals. Although many other states now demand a compulsory report of data from all hospitals none produced so far has been as comprehensive as this one. A patient who acquires an additional infection during hospital stay runs the risk of running into higher bills and also has a higher risk of dying being more than five times greater than those those patients who did not have hospital infections.
