A recently conducted survey has revealed that Irish hospitals are definitely cleaner than those in neighboring England and Wales.
The study carried out between February and May 2006 by the UK and Ireland based Hospital Infection Society looked into 75,000 cases has revealed that hardly 5% patients suffered from acute life threatening infections contracted during the stay at health centers across Ireland. In contrast the average noted across England and Ireland was 7.6%.During the survey health inspectors scouted for various pathogens which are potentially life threatening and implicated in causing pneumonias and blood poisoning , Assistant national director of population health, of the Irish Health Service Executive (HSE), Dr Kevin Kelleher, was pleased with the reports but said that there is still more scope for improvement since the data collected helps to allow the HSE to focus on lacunae and increase efforts to bring down healthcare-associated Infections to a bare minimum.
