Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) dietary supplements have proven in recent studies that they are very beneficial to cardiac patients in stabilizing some of the altered functions of the heart according to the results of a study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, October 2006.

Studies conducted have shown that PUFA helps to reduce the intensity of some of the aberrations that are seen in cardiac function which usually reflects a bad prognosis, in those who have recently suffered from a Congestive Cardiac Failure (CCF) but have there after stabilized.

Twenty five patients who had certain amount of damage done to the muscular wall of their heart, when they had previously suffered from a CCF.(,commonly referred to by the lay person as 'Heart Attack' ,) which impaired the proper pumping of blood from the heart ,willingly underwent the studies conducted on them by Dr Ferrari and his colleagues . As part of the research one half of the group was given 2gms of PUFA supplements and the others were given placebo daily during which time they were also on optimal medicinal treatment.

When they were followed up 4 months later the group that were put on PUFA supplements showed marked improvement in heart rate ,baro reflex sensitivity(blood pressure recorded between two beats) and some other factors which proved enhanced heart function.

The research thus concluded on a note that reflected that the addition of PUFA supplements to the diet along with the time honored medications given to cardiac patients would certainly help them to face life with a strong heart.
