One of the most advanced nations of the world today, Britain had to face the embarrassment of being labeled as the most 'obese nation in Europe' last week. In a recent report by CABE it was brought to light that more than one -fourth of the nation's population can be declared obese and overweight.
The Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) with its headquarters in London works towards improving people's quality of life through good design.
AdvertisementCABE contends that a well-designed city can go a long way in developing motivation in citizens to be more physically active to avoid becoming fat. The report prepared by CABE showed shat two-thirds of the British men and a third of the female population is physically unfit. The only exercise most Britons seem to engage in seems to include just the routine day to day activities like the daily trips to the shopping malls or offices to work. With no genuine effort taken towards the purpose of maintaining a fitness regime, the results that reflects upon the entire nation is appalling.
CABE is of the opinion that cities should therefore be designed to encourage its citizens to walk or run. Improving quality of parks and including special amenities that support activities related to physical fitness like showers and changing rooms, secure locker systems at places of work would certainly encourage folks to take some time off to work out even at their work place.
Good looking cities and well planned pavements and side walks would surely make any worn out citizen to think twice before putting off another evening walk. Money spent on improvising the facade of a city surely cannot go to waste if it shows a difference after all at the 'waist!!
