Wendy Ooteman a Dutch researcher has stumbled upon some very interesting results following her study in pursuit of understanding the biological and genetic characteristics of alcoholics, which ultimately determine which drugs can be used to curb the irresistible urge to drink.
The urge to consume alcoholic drinks can be stifled with drugs like Naltrexone and Acamprosate. The investigations done by the researcher highlights which characteristics of a patient determines the choice of drug.The overpowering urge which compels an alcoholic to drink, not only ensnares him but also makes it more difficult for him to shake off this intense grip These insatiable craving for alcohol can be curbed using Naltrexone, which works by the use of conditioning the brain to receive an incentive or reward, and Acamprosate which works by means of the stress system. The drugs named here may not be sufficient for every patient. The query that was raised during the study was if the behavior patterns or characteristics of patient can determine which drug suits him.
