Deanne Thompson of the Orange County Health Care Agency has confirmed that eating some live raw sawagani crabs on a dare may have contributed to the outbreak of a lung fluke parasite infection that occurred in eight people.
'I don't know if every one of these eight -- or any of them -- ate them on a dare,' Thompson said. She added that last month only four people had been confirmed as being infected, but the number has risen to eight now. Riptide Rockin' Sushi & Teppan Grill in Mission Viejo and Chomp Rockin' Sushi & Teppan Grill in Fullerton were the restraunts wherethe people age live crabs. Orange county officials have instructed all eating-places to serve cooked crabs.
'We have the only known human infections in the state,' the agency's Howard Sutter said. The symptoms of lung fluke infection include coughing, diarrhea, breathing difficulties, abdominal pain, fever and hives.
