Woman Critically Ill After Getting Wrong Blood

Ranchi: A woman at the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) here is battling for life after doctors gave her the wrong blood group.

Leela Devi, who had been admitted to RIMS for a surgery, received B+ blood instead of her A+ group and is presently in the ICU. Doctors say the next 48 hours are critical for her.

She was admitted to the gynaecology department and was operated upon three days ago. Her condition worsened when she was given the wrong blood, a mistake that was discovered only after two bottles had already been administered.

"This is disgusting. The hospital is callous while treating patients. How can wrong blood could be given to a patient when the details are given to the authorities prior to the operation," said a relative.

Institute director N.N. Agrawal has ordered a probe into the incident. "We are probing the matter. The guilty will not be spared," he told Leela Devi's family.

Two months ago in the same hospital, a Jharkhand Armed Police (JAP) constable underwent a knee operation after he was mistaken for somebody else.
