Relatives of a patient, who died due to alleged negligence by doctors, attacked the medical staff at the government-run King George Hospital Sunday in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam.

Three doctors including the chief medical officer were injured in the attack while six doctors and other staff ran out of hospital for safety.

Tension prevailed at the hospital as relatives of the patient barged into the office of chief medical officer and beat him up.

The relatives of one Srinivas Rao alleged that he died as the doctors did not provide timely and proper medical care and even demanded bribe from them. They held a sit-in demonstration at the hospital.

Rao, who was injured in an accident in Vizianagarm district, was shifted to the hospital around 9 a.m., but died while being treated, said Varalakshmi, superintendent of the institution.

Denying that he died due to negligence by doctors, she said he was brought in a critical condition.

The incident evoked strong protest from the medical fraternity. Doctors and medical staff reused to resume duties till they were provided security. Police rushed to the hospital to bring the situation under control.
