The three-hour open-heart surgery was performed on a 17 yr old boy successfully at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital (TMCH).
An eight-member team led by cardio thoracic surgeon N Vasudevan performed the surgery on the boy who was suffering from an arterial septal, congenital defect on the 4th of August.Dr S Balakrishnan the dean of TMCH said that the patient, S.Velumurugan's condition was stable and that he would most likely be discharged on August 16. It was reported that this was the first time in the history of the medical collage hospital that an open-heart surgery was performed.
S. Balakrishnan, who supervised the surgery, explained that Velmurugan was a Plus Two student and a native of Thanjavur. It was explained that the boy had a hole in between two upper chambers of his heart Artrial Septal Defect. The surgeons performed the operation by opening the right upper chamber to close the hole.
The doctors explained that the surgery lasted 2 hours, wherein the heart was completely stopped and their respective functions were taken over by a heart lung machine. They explained that Velmurugan is hale and hearty and is currently recuperating at the hospital.
The hospital authorities stated that N. Vasudevan, Professor of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, performed the surgery along with a surgical team, which included J. Sivakumar, T. Anantharamakrishnan, K. Mahadevan, K. Leo, Udhayanan and P. Balaraman, a post-graduate trainee.
The Dean further mentioned that depending on requirement of patients, a date would be fixed every month for taking up similar procedures in future.
