FDA Approves Famvir For Genital Herpes
The US Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug called Famvir as a one-day treatment for recurrent genital herpes and cold sores. The drug is manufactured by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp and is intended to be taken by people with healthy immune systems. The drug can be consumed as 1,000 milligrams doses twice daily for one day. There is no cure for genital herpes and this drug does not do so, but relieves some of the symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that over 45 million people in the US are affected by genital herpes. Before the FDA approved it, Famvir treatment was spread over five days at a lower dose.
