Canada: A long way to go on HIV/AIDS initiatives

by Medindia Content Team on Aug 1 2006 5:38 PM

The figures of HIV infected people in Canada seem to be on the high, which is a wake up call to spruce up its drive against containing the spread of disease.

Ignorance is certainly not bliss, especially when it comes to HIV/AIDS, and Public Health Agency in Canada has reported an alarming figure of 58000 cases as against 50,000 in 2002.

According to reports, aboriginals run a three times enhanced risk of HIV infection as compared to Canadians. To help this susceptible chunk of people, more funds are required to expand the reach of AIDS initiatives and bring down the infection rates.

"Canada still has a way to go before the threat of HIV/AIDS is eliminated. Groups that have seen a decrease in infection rates are still considered at-risk and progress to date cannot be taken for granted," the health agency said.
