A review of 12 different studies showed that 1 gram of calcium supplement taken during pregnancy is very effective in reducing the risk of suffering from pre-eclampsia by 50%.

The study was carried out by the Cochrane Collaboration and it found that calcium supplements cuts the risk of this condition. Hence pregnant women are asked to include calcium supplements daily to prevent this fatal condition. According to statistics thousands of mothers and babies in the UK are affected every year by pre-eclampsia.

The exact cause is still not known but is known that the condition is related to high blood pressure. The major problem with this fatal condition is that it is very difficult to treat pre-eclampsia and this puts both the mother and the baby in danger. But researchers feel that a bigger study is needed to understand and tackle the condition in a better way.
