A girl medical student from Visva Bharati University was so traumatised after ragging by her seniors that she had to be admitted to hospital.

The girl, a first year student of Sangeet Bhawan and a resident of Ananda Sadan hostel was ragged by three to four seniors on July two at the hostel, according to a complaint lodged by her local guardian with the university authorities yesterday.

Confirming the incident, University Registrar S K Sarkar told PTI that "I have received a complaint about the ragging from the girl's local guardian. It is a very unfortunate incident." She was admitted to the university hospital on Monday from where her she was shifted to the Burdwan Medical College Hospital on Tuesday after her condition deteriorated, university sources said.

The Registrar said he has instructed the Proctor and the Principal of the concerned Bhavan to look into the matter.

With medical admissions now taking place ragging by senior medicos is not unusual although most states have banned it and it is considered to be a punishable offence. Ragging is a time old practise in medical colleges.
