Steps to End Discrimination of AIDS Patients

by Medindia Content Team on Jul 8 2006 10:49 AM

Steps would be taken to end discrimination towards HIV positive patients and ensure welfare measures to them, National Legal Service Authority Chairman and Supreme Court Judge K G Balakrishnan said today.

Delivering the keynote address here at the joint meeting of parliamentary committees to protect the rights of HIV/AIDS patients and prevent crimes against women, he said a comprehensive bill in this regard was under the consideration of the government.

The government and the public should jointly strive to check spread of AIDS and crimes against women and girl children, he said. The proposed bill had provisions to institute advisory committees involving social organisations and a Health Ombudsman to look into the issues.

Parliamentary Standing Committee (Home) Chairperson Sushma Swaraj, who also spoke, said AIDS patients should be given the right to maintain their normal lifestyle. Judiciary and media should work towards ensuring this, she said.
