Senior Researcher Harassed In AIIMS

by Medindia Content Team on Jul 1 2006 10:49 AM

A senior research fellow at the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has alleged harassment stating that her ad hoc appointment was terminated due to her participation in the pro-reservation agitation at the Institute recently.

In a letter to Anbumani Ram doss, Union minister for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Ajita Gill said that although the "vicious propaganda and chauvinistic attitude of upper caste dominated doctors in the AIIMS campus’’ was widely reported, a small group of progressive students and doctors held a silent protest within the campus, during the recess, to register their protest against the anti-reservation propaganda.

"My participation in the group was not taken kindly in my Department and they found me incompetent post-protest even though the Head of the Department himself had given me an extension based on my performance of six months just prior to the protest. I have been verbally abused and harassed by the staff of the Department soon after the anti-reservation protest was called off on June 1.'' writes Dr.Gill in her letter.

She has requested that firm action be taken against the Head of the Department and a senior physician for harassing her.
