K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital not in the list of collages to be upgraded by the new UPA government.
There is an increased bitterness among the local people around Tiruchy, over the decision of the Union ministry of health of not including K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College Hospital, Tiruchy, to be upgraded on par with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi.The recent decision by the Centre to upgrade the Government Medical College at Salem, has invoked several political parties and organisations to urge the centre to examine the possibility of upgrading the hospital in Tiruchy as well.
Explaining that the decision of the previous government to be upgraded the local hospital to be on par with the AIIMS at an outlay of Rs. 100 crore, had bought joy to the people of central districts. They have expressed their resentment over the United Progressive Alliance government decision to suspend the project as they feel that the Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss favours the medical college at Salem for upgrading, ignoring the earlier governments proposal.
The decision of the Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, at its meeting that was held recently, to upgrade 13 medical institutions in the country, including the Government Medical College at Salem but not the K. A. P. Viswanatham Medical College Hospital has shocked the various parties and organisations throughout the state.
M. Selvaraj, the secretary, of the district unit of Communist Party of India, expressed his disappointment. He stated that with the advantage of the central location, upgrading of the local hospital would be of an immense help to the residents of the district and neighbouring districts. Explaining that the facilities in the hospital were not adequate to meet the requirements of growing population, he is urging the centre to consider the inclusion of the hospital as the second institution from Tamil Nadu for be upgraded.
Adopting a resolution, pleading for upgrade of the hospital as per the announcement made earlier the Tamil Nadu Consumer Federation at its meeting held on Friday has called upon the Union and State Ministers hailing from the central districts to initiate the steps necessary for the inclusion of the hospital in the list of the institutions that are to be upgraded.
