Number Of Seats Increased In Theni Medical College

The Theni Medical College in Tamil Nadu has been allotted 100 seats, taking the number of medical seats in State-run medical colleges to 1600. Health Minister K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran announced that the government would continue to look for increasing seats in these colleges. "We will continue to make efforts to increase seats in colleges," he told reporters.

He also said that the government would try to ensure that capitation fee levied by private medical colleges would be less for poor and meritorious students. He also added that there was an increase in funding mainly for AIDS prevention, control and education "Every year, there is a steady increase in the money allotted for AIDS prevention/control and this year, acting upon the Chief Minister's request, Rs. 15 crore more was sanctioned."
