Himachal Pradesh Medical Officers Association has urged the doctors working in various hospitals in the state to opt for intra-dermal route for anti-rabies vaccine, as recommended by World Health Organisation .

The Association in release said that by following the intra-dermal route, the doctors could vaccinate five patients from on vial of vaccine and the cost would 70 per cent less as compared to intra-muscular vaccine.

The Association had taken the decision in view of increase in number of cases of animal bite and shortage of anti-rabies vaccine coupled with inability of poor people to pay the high cost of vaccine, the release added.

The Association also urged the vaccine manufacturing companies to specifically write 'intra-dermal use' on the lables of vaccines in the interest of patients and the doctors and claimed that the intra-dermal vaccine had the same efficacy as intra-muscular vaccine and the number of dozes was also five, one less than the intra-muscular dozes.
