Flexibility and facilities need of the hour in hospitals

The Irish Hospital Consultants Association which recently appointed a new president has expressed the need for accommodative work methods, top of mind among consultants.

Dr Mary Mc Caffrey, a consultant obstetrician gynecologist at Kerry General Hospital said "There is nothing to be gained by a consultant being in an operating theatre at 7am if other staff are not also present. The reforms we need will come when health service managers begin the very considerable task of bringing these many categories of employees to new ways of working."

In her opinion, though flexibility in hospitals will enhance patients’ treatment and provide them better benefits for the money spent, yet it might not solve all of the hospitals’ other issues. The need for adequate hospital beds was also expressed by the Doctor.
