New Delhi, Jun 11. Heart specialists from all over the world will meet at Mount Abu in September to dwell on the growing incidence of heart disease in India and how preventive measures can help control its early onset.
The three-day World Congress on Clinical & Preventive Cardiology is being held from September 22 at Mount Abu in Rajasthan. It will evolve guidelines for several burning issues and newer technologies besides crystallizing recent trends and newer directions for advanced patient care, according to Dr H K Chopra, Organizing Chairman of the Congress.
Advertisement"As of now there are no preventive cardiology guidelines in India, we go by American and European guidelines. The Congress would frame an intervention strategy to prevent the disease and also delay its onset," said Dr JPS Sawhney, cardiologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital here and a member of the Steering Committee.
"It is the first international conference of this scale on preventive cardiology that is being held in India. The main aim is to shift from costly surgical procedures to preventive measures and management with drugs," he said.
Over 2.5 million people die due to cardiovascular diseases in India every year and almost 60 per cent of them without any medical aid available to them. The most worrying cause for this country is that Coronary Artery Disease affects Indians 10-15 years earlier than other people in the rest of the world, says noted cardiologist Dr S K Sama and member of the Steering Committee of the Congress.
For a country like India to provide huge budgets for treatment of heart diseases is something next to impossible. It is all the more important that stress is laid on preventive aspects of the disease in the form of change in lifestyle and proper education regarding dietetics and regular schedule for exercise, he said.
There will be different scientific sessions on recent advances in clinical cardiology, preventive cardiology, hypertension, coronary artery disease, interventional cardiology and other areas, according to the Cardiological Society of India.
The conference is being organized by the Cardiological Society of India, Delhi branch, Defence Research & Development Organization, Asian Pacific Society of Cardiology, Healthy Heart Education and Research Foundation, International Medical Sciences Academy.
