Eight-year-old twins Amal and Amrutha, who became orphaned after their HIV-infected parents died four years ago, will be formally adopted by the Kerala Government at a function here tomorrow .
The function, being organised by Cheruvathur Grama Panchayat to completely take care of the children's health, education and welfare, would be inaugurated by Health and Social Welfare Minister P K Sreemati, who at a recent Cabinet meeting mooted the idea of adopting the children, Grama Panchayat president Munambath Govindan said today.The plight of Amal, who is HIV positive, and his sister Amrutha, studying in class three in a local government school, got worsened after their grandmother Janaki, who had been looking after them since the demise of their parents in 2002, died of old age last month.
The twins had since been staying in their house near here, constructed at the initiative of Grama Panchayat Committee at a cost of Rs 9.50 lakhs nine months ago, and were occasionally helped by their mother's younger sister Shylaja.
The children's case was then taken up by +Keraleeyam+, an organisation under the state Social Welfare Department under +Navajeevanam+ scheme, which arranged furniture and other items at a cost of Rs 75,000 after the government gave the nod for adopting the children a few days ago.
