Prophetess Lucy Nduta of the Salvation Healing Ministry, who is a self-proclaimed AIDS healer, was produced before court on charges of swindling six people of Sh1.6 million. The money was obtained by telling the people that they would be cured of HIV/AIDS through prayers.

The Nairobi Principal Magistrate, Margaret Muigai, denied her bail since Central Police Station CID officer, Patrick Nyale said that many more people were coming forward with similar complaints. "She has a constitutional right, but police officers are entitled to investigate the new complaints," said Muigai.

Nduta has pleaded not guilty to the six counts. In the first case in August 2004 she is supposed to have taken Sh300, 000 from Ms Catherine Gitui and promising to cure her daughter. Later in July 2005 she allegedly received Sh700, 000 from Susan Katila Muchiri by posing as someone who could cure AIDS.

Judy Kariuki was conned of Sh158, 000, while Bilha Gitau shelled out Sh120,000. Nduta also obtained Sh300, 000 from Joachim Njuguna and promised to cure his relatives. The hearing is set for August 2.
