Each year over 15,000 people in Indonesia are being killed by drugs, a new study has revealed.Studies carried out jointly by National Narcotics Agency BNN and the University of Indonesia indicated that a considerably large amount of money was being spent on drug trafficking and on drug-addicted people in the country.
'Some Rupiah12 trillions (local currency) are spent on drug trafficking and another Rp12 trillion on drug-addicted people' BNN Executive Chairman, Made Mangku Pastika said after burning opium seized during the second Nila Rencong Operation on Friday.He said Indonesia was facing three big enemies, namely drugs, corruption and terrorism.
'In the narcotics case, there is also corruption which involved police, prosecutors and court. The business is attractive due to its huge turn out although it may cause suffering to people,' he added.
Therefore, he added, the Nila Rencong Operation here could be said as an effort to cut off the supply of opium as 80 per cent of drug-addicted people in Indonesia consumed opium.
In anticipation of opium re-planting, he said BNN would coordinate with local administrations to adopt alternative development programme such as changing opium plant with other economically valuable crops.
'The local administration should provide market for their crops and infrastructure as well as improve the education and health sectors,' he said.
