Majority of Chandigarh's school teachers are not comfortable talking on HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health to students and 60 per cent of the city's adolescents have problems related to sex, according to a Panjab University study.
As many as 50 per cent adolescents studying from classes IX to XII have problems related to education and then at least comes emotional disturbances and social adjustment with the society, it says.
The Centre for Adult, Continuing Education and Extension (CACEE), Panjab University, undertook a study on 'Adolescent Behaviour and Role of Teachers and Parents' during the workshops and seminars organised by the Centre in various urban and rural schools of the city.
'Our study analysis shows that adolescents are highly emotional in nature, who do not have a free hand to develop their social moral values, which is why they are generally assertive, explorative and revolt for simple things and therefore, face invisible crisis in their tender age,' says Renu Gandhi, programme coordinator from CACEE.
Gandhi says most of the teachers they interviewed said they were not comfortable talking on HIV/AIDS and related things to students while some chose to give vague answers on the topic.
Gandhi, along with Dr Avnish Jolly, undertook the study and interviewed 450 students, 20 teachers and 30 parents in different workshops and seminars.
