Noted sand sculpture artist Sudarsan Patnaik used the sands of tsunami-hit Pondicherry beach on Saturday to create a sculptor called "Mother and Child" .

'Mother and Child' - spreading the message of polio eradication was unveiled on the Tourism Secretary A. Anbarasu. He unveiled the sculpture with two polio drops to mark the last phase of this year's Pulse Polio campaign that ends on Sunday.

Thousands of tourists, among them many foreigners, thronged the beach in this former French town on the east coast to see the work that took Patnaik 36 hours to sculpt.

"The response was huge and I am overwhelmed by the warmth and support from the people here," Patnaik said.

"I always want to promote healthcare events. I had done AIDS awareness campaigns but this is especially for children and mothers, which gives me immense pleasure," he told IANS.

The Pondicherry government has invited Patnaik to come every year to organize a sand-sculpting event on its beach.
