Surgeon Buys a Retractor from eBay

by Medindia Content Team on May 20 2006 3:18 PM

Kevin Murray, a General Surgeon, went ahead and purchased a medical equipment from an internet auction site, eBay, without seeking the official permission from the hospital authorities. Apparently, he had already purchased £45,000 of equipment for his novel operating theater at James Paget Hospital, Gorleston, Norfolk. A retractor, which was much needed, had slipped his mind when he placed the huge order.

Since a retractor is critical equipment in an operation theater, the surgeon, with a motive to save time, placed the order without seeking official permission. The equipment was subsequently seized by the hospital and after customary checks and procedures, was inducted into Dr.Murray’s operation theater.

Roy Haynes, director of operations at the hospital, said: "When he was appointed Mr. Murray was not aware of administrative procedures we have in place where instruments are concerned."
