HIV positive people in Tamil Nadu and their support groups have planned to organize a Global Action Week, to draw attention of the UN towards non-implementation of the recommendations of the UN General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) to address the problem of HIV/AIDS.
Esther Mariaselvam, programme manager of ActionAid, told reporters here that UNGASS in 2001 had set goals like offering universal access to quality treatment for people who are HIV positive, creating a society free of stigma, protection of the rights of children with HIV.‘Not one of these goals are being implemented globally and we would like to record our protest and offer charter of demands to the Union and state Ministries of Health, during the week-long protests to be held from May 20-26,’ she said.
‘The UNGASS is holding its review meeting from May 31 and Indian delegates would be participating. We hope that the Indian government would take note of our demands and present them there,’ she added.
During the Global Action week, HIV postive individuals will conduct public meetings, street theatre, poster campaigns and distribute pamphlets throughout the state, about the issue.
