EU Countries Pushed To Make All the Preparation to Handle the Bird Flu Pandemic

by Medindia Content Team on May 17 2006 3:05 PM

In order to effectively handle the situation in case of an outbreak of bird flu pandemic European Union (EU) are urged to make all necessary preparation. They are asked to appoint a bird flu tsar. A top EU official said that European Union would also have to look harder at immediate practical measures and implement it in each of the bloc's 25 countries.

He said that their problem is that the decision-making was too complicated because so many countries were involved in planning. Belgium has the authority to make decisions on the spot as he has a tsar. This is because Belgium decisions are taken by a health expert rather than a government minister. The United Nations appointed Dr. David Nabarro to lead its worldwide drive to contain bird flu. It has killed about 115 people worldwide and experts fear that the lethal H5N1 avian influenza virus might mutate and spark a global pandemic capable of killing millions. Hence various measures are taken to tackle such situations in case the need arise in Europe.
