Shortage Of Faculty Members At AIIMS

by Medindia Content Team on May 13 2006 7:38 PM

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here is running short of faculty members and its current strength is much less than sanctioned, Rajya Sabha was informed Friday.

Replying to a question, minister of state for health and family welfare Panabaka Lakshmi said that the AIIMS was running with just 479 faculty members as against its sanctioned strength of 543.

She also informed the house that during 2003-05, 20 faculty members had either resigned or taken voluntary retirement.

However, the minister claimed that such level of attrition was normal at any centre of excellence in a competing value framework.

In March, three of AIIMS' top doctors - head of neurosurgery V.S. Mehta, professor of medicine Anoop Misra and head of surgery S.N. Mehta had left to join private hospitals.
